Former Idaho governor on canned hunts

I got a kick out of this snippet from the Idaho Statesman and thought I’d share :

“Those people that believe in shooting animals through a fence after enticing them to the fence with a bucket of grain ought to turn the rifle around the other way,” said Andrus, a Democratic former governor and U.S. Interior secretary.

Apparently he got a cheer out of a crowd of sportsmen at the event !

  1. Isn’t the same lobbyist working for both the Canned and Diseased Elk “Hunting” Industry, and the Idaho Woolgrower’s???

Now the Woolgrowers are clamoring to get Butch Otter to purge bighorn sheep from public lands where domestic sheep are intruding on their habitat and sickening wild herds, like in the South Hills and Cottonwood area near Twin Falls. That same lobbyist – Stan Boyd – was also involved in Idaho’s awful Wolf Plan.

The Germ and Dead Wildlife Lobby …

  2. Good for Andrus. I think virtually everyone finds hunting big game animals inside fenced enclosures distasteful. The problem most people have with banning these operations like we have in Montana is that you are allowing the state to outlaw a person’s livelihood. Some wonder who might be next on the list. If you’re making a living doing something unpopular where do we draw the line. We have to be very careful about this kind of thing.

  3. Monte,
I agree with you. As loathsome as the “canned hunt” industry is, we do not have the right to ban a source of income that is not illegal. Besides, we need someone to point to as the definition of “bottom feeders” and “pond scum”.

  4. … “allowing a state to outlaw a person’s livelihood”. What? There is a serious concern about diseases, genetic contamination, and ethics of treating elk like cows. Plus some of these operations “elk farms” are situated in areas where they block big game migration and cause all kinds of other problems.

  5. I guess I would have to say that the idea of “shooter cattle” operations might appeal to me….. not for long but that head would sure look good on my wall 😉

  6. If someone did not like cattle lets say, just for a thought…and they allowed folks to come on their land and just shoot the cattle say for 100.00 a head just for the money would ranchers or any one accept that? What is the difference? If those folks that sponser canned hunts for a living can not find another way to make money they need to move somewhere else and not use animals for their financial gain in that way. Can hunting is just plain disgusting, no sport and anyone that does it in my book may as well just go to their back yard and shoot their dog, cause that is what it amounts too.

  7. Last time I checked, things like drug dealing, prostitution, larceny, etc., all of which are ways of making a living, are legally banned.

  8. Lewis Black did a hilarious bit on Cheney’s canned hunting trips. among other things he said
“They’ve turned a petting zoo into Auschwitz”
Not exactly right – but cose enough.

  9. Geez,

For once I agree with most of the folks posting above. Wanna guess which one is the exception??

  10. Instead of the $600 tax refund that Bush is trying to bribe us with, I think that open season on cattle grazed on public lands would be a much better boost to the economy and ecosystems. Any family making less than !00K per year and any individual making less than 50k should recieve permits to bag as much beef as they can in a 24 hr period. If someone bags more than they or their family can eat in a year, the surplus must be donated to the poor.

  11. I’m with ya cat, but I don’t want Defenders paying for our “confirmed kills” either. After 18 years of failure I’d like to see that program scrapped. I might even be tempted to start supporting them again….. nah, I doubt it.

  12. “If you’re making a living doing something unpopular where do we draw the line.”

Draw it just on the other side of welfare ranching. 😉

  13. Wouldn’t it be a shame if cattle that graze on public lands were to ingest some of the poisons that the livestock lobby insists on keeping legal.

  14. Hawaii has a hunt for feral and trespassing cattle…! This is the funniest damn thing I’ve heard in a long time…!

“The daily bag limit is two per hunter per day, no season limit.” That’s a lot o’ beef…!

    I’ve got to chew on this… 😉

Thanks, Brian, for this info…! Any more jewels you want to toss in the fray?

  15. i’d say that considering the public service ralph – it’d probably be wise to have the hunt under ‘stewardship contract’ … they could use some of those “range improvement” funds to pony out maybe $50 or $100 per bag to the hunter – compensation for fuel and such.

if this were the case – i might consider eating beef again…

anything to give you an excuse to visit the islands Mack !
