Comprehensive coverage for vehicle can be financially smart for those who travel to camp, hike, raft, etc.

You can insure against a bear breaking into your rig and much more-

In addition to insurance against collision many other things can damage or destroy your vehicle. It has happened to me. Rock slides, falling trees, big hail stones, you name it! For those who travel to use the outdoors for hunting/wildlife viewing, photography, backpacking, fishing, campaing, there are many dangers that increase over normal mostly city driving.

I discovered that in B.C., that aggressive porcupine will get under your truck and chew your brake hoses apart.  Your rig parked next to a stand of lodgepole pine could be a total loss if a strong wind comes.  While I don’t know of any wolves damaging vehicles, bears do as the article below describes.

Not so unbearable: Auto insurance can cover damage done by bear break-in. By Lori Johnston.

Beyond the ‘routine” collision, it would be interesting to hear of damages folks’ vehicles have suffered during their outdoor activities.

  1. While I was out and about last July a hail storm got my Forrester for $7,000. I owed $6,200 on it and now I drive around with a dented hood and a paided for car.

My F-150 did not even get dented sitting in the drive way. They wrote me a $2900 check — for what? I now have a better understanding of the insurance business. Ten years of premiums returned in a 2 minute hail strom.

    1. Total replacement and liability insurance for my skiff worth about $8,500 is $100/year. Its a pretty good deal because I get pooled in with thousands of weekend warriors who take their’s out a few days a year and leave it on the trailer in their driveway the rest, while mine sits moored out on an outhaul rope year-round, including extreme Southeast and north winds.

  2. Elk – Spent some anxious moments outside of Wisdom the other day (on the side of the road) waiting out a thunderstorm, complete with larger hail.

Thinking its only a matter of time before some insurance company out there is gonna latch on to the idea of “hunter loss” insurance. Book a hunting trip – but due to weather, bad meal at the local cantina, predators, stupidity or an asshole of a guide, you get a full refund……. no questions asked.

There already is modified forms of that type of insurance. As far as an “asshole of a guide”, you can not fix stupid no company would want to issue a policy for that situation.

I would never had thought that Wisdom would have a hailstorm. Thinking about Wisdom I need to spend a weekend camping at Twin Lakes, before summer turns to yellow and the leaves fall. Did you know that Twin Lakes has a population of Lake Trout that were left over from the last ice age, interesting fact.
