Dr. Ralph Maughan is professor emeritus of political science at Idaho State University with specialties in natural resource politics, public opinion, interest groups, political parties, voting and elections. Aside from academic publications, he is author or co-author of three hiking/backpacking guides, and he is past President of the Western Watersheds Project.

    I heard a rumor today that “big oil” has recently made a very large contribution to the National Cattlemen’s Association, presumably to get the ranchers to shut up about drilling on the range, among other things. I haven’t been able to confirm it anywhere. Has anyone heard anything about this, or might it be a baseless rumor?
