Dr. Ralph Maughan is professor emeritus of political science at Idaho State University. He was a Western Watersheds Project Board Member off and on for many years, and was also its President for several years. For a long time he produced Ralph Maughan’s Wolf Report. He was a founder of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. He and Jackie Johnson Maughan wrote three editions of “Hiking Idaho.” He also wrote “Beyond the Tetons” and “Backpacking Wyoming’s Teton and Washakie Wilderness.” He created and is the administrator of The Wildlife News.

i think the answer from the state and the fed and the park is summed up nicely in the last 2 paragraphs,
“We have an existing plan and record of decision that the five agencies have agreed to concerning management of bison outside the park boundaries, which includes the Horse Butte area,” Nash said. “We’re going to continue to work with our partners.”
“There is a new landowner,” Nash said. “It doesn’t change our record of decision; it doesn’t change our [Interagency Bison Management Plan]; it doesn’t change the issues surrounding brucellosis risk management.”
I am so sick and tired of NPS passing the buck.
What I’m sick of more, though, is every time I go into the park, the bison I see end up dead.
1,510 now according to BFC have been killed. Hundreds more have died from the winter. The Horse Butte season hasn’t even started in earnest (though it’s already done too much).
And, this is the system that people want to play nice with? Figure out how to beat? Get the right lawyers, or the right people in office? Come on. We’re dealing with lunatics, here, lunatics beholden to strange bureaucratic oaths (in this case the IBMP). Shouldn’t we be trying pretty hard to re-think our strategies and tactics?
Of course, I’m just venting because the slaughter just gets worse and worse, and it eats me up inside. I know that there isn’t an easy road. I do know that this is exactly where I need to be pouring even more of my own energy and creativity.
I am upset; everywhere I live, everywhere I go, there is such monstrous injustice. Why do we keep losing? What else can we be doing? We’re trying in Bozeman – we’ve got our group started. But, it’s a long road. And, each death hurts me personally so much.
Alas.
Al Nash and the NPS reflect the kind of arrogance that causes revolutions.
I like to think that there’s a special circle in Hell–one of perpetual trampling hooves and goring horns–for all the sell-outs in this sorry mess, for everyone from the betraying bureaucrats like Mr. Nash to the sadistic DOL tormenters. Some have sold-out the bison, others have sold-out simple human decency (they probably never possessed it in the first place). Or perhaps human decency is the exception, not the rule. Sometimes I wonder.
Federal RODs, can and are, changed every day to meet the changing issues surrounding them. They are dynamic, not static as Nash would have us believe.

today, there are 3 big bulls on the gardiner school property,, heading downriver to the the CUT Ranch,
also, just across the river from the airport in gardiner, an herd of appx 12-15 bison are resting on the ground there,,, so, if the follow the usual procedure,, you can add about 18-20 more to the total.
