Two grizzly bear cubs shot in NW Wyoming

More grizzly bear deaths. Mortality quota exceeded for male and female bears in Greater Yellowstone-
States can’t manage grizzlies and they should be relisted-

Two grizzly bear cubs shot in NW Wyoming. AP. Oct. 27

The brief article doesn’t mention the ESA implications, but my earlier post certainly leads to the conclusion that both male and female grizzly mortality quotas for the year have been exceeded for the delisted Greater Yellowstone population.

-More- $10,000 offered in grizzly shooting case. Jackson Hole Daily. Oct. 28

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is offering up to $10,000 for information about the shooting of two yearling grizzly cubs near Union Pass Road on Oct. 19.

Ralph it should say “Relisted” not “delisted” on the article’s title…

…officials believe they have been taken illegaly (you bet) and not in self defense (need to self defense against cubs?) Question is, what happened to mom? Does she already grace a fireplace?

Ok the second article speaks about tracks of mom nearby….

    Jon,

You’ve got to cut Ralph some slack. For 8 years we’ve been stuck with an administration that would never even think of RE-listing a species. Poor Ralph is out of practice! 😉

What the hell is wrong with Wyoming?

Don’t be so sure mortality limits have been exceeded–cubs barely count due to the way mortality limits were set when grizzlies were delisted. Also, exceeding mortality limits merely triggers a review, not automatic relisting as a threatened species. When US Fish & Wildlife Service grizzly bear recovery coordinatior Chris Servheen got grizzlies delisted, he made sure that getting them relisted would be damn near impossible. Dolts killing cubs may prove Servheen wrong.

    Chuck,

I’m not completely sure, but given the fact that there are two months left to go, chances are high for more mortality . . . maybe a lot more. Events will unfortunately prove this headline to be correct.

  9. Jon Way Avatar

Yes, you are right JB! Re-what…

I read this web site everyday to keep up with the wonderful job Ralph does reporting facts. I am a Republican that supports the great work done here. I am disappointed that almost every subject has a comment regarding the current state of government. I am not happy either but I truly wonder with all the events affecting the country how much will be done by BO to change how wildlife is treated around Yellowstone and throughout the NW USA. I hope things change but doubt they will. I hope, in order, things are done to protect buffalo, bears and then wolves. We cannot lose what nature provides or we lose a great part of the identify that defines America.

What is wrong with us people?
Do we have to kill it all to prove that we are at the top..?
” I am a big guy with the gun and I killed 2 bear cubs…heheheh”
just like I am a big hero..I killed “Limpy”

My dream country I moved in 23 years ago is not so dreamy and wonderful any more…

But, I still believe the ‘good’ prevail…

    This is one sad story…

G&F Seeks Information on Moose Poaching
PINEDALE- The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking any
information regarding two moose that were illegally shot and left
approximately 10 miles northeast of Boulder on the Scab Creek Road, near
the Scab Creek elk feedground. The two moose, a cow and a yearling
bull, were both shot from the road with a high-powered rifle, presumably
last Wednesday, October 22nd or Thursday, October 23rd. The two
carcasses were discovered by Pinedale Game Warden Brian Nesvik during
routine patrols last weekend. The meat was not salvageable.
“We already have depressed moose populations in this area, so
it makes the effects of this type of illegal shooting even more
significant,” said Nesvik. “Not only is it disrespectful to the
animals, it takes away the opportunity for others to hunt, photograph or
    just enjoy seeing them.”
Anyone with possible information regarding this poaching
incident, or other suspicious vehicles or activities, are encouraged to
call the Pinedale Game and Fish office at 1-800-452-9107 or the STOP
POACHING hotline at 1-877-WGFD-TIP (1-877-943-3847) or Pinedale Game
Warden, Brian Nesvik at 307-367-2470. Any information leading to the
arrest and conviction may result in a reward of up to $5,000.00.

Micheal L, right on. What we do to our land & wildlife in the name of progress is off the charts. Our country has far too many hatefull citizens who vent their frustrations by “killing metaphors”.

Michael L, I used to be republican but am not any more. i read on NWF.org that Yellowstone is BO’s favorite patch of public land so maybe he will do a better job of managing what is important to him.

It’s becoming an epidemic. THis happened a few miles from my home.
    From todays paper:
“Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking any information on two poached bull elk killed over the weekend in the Bear Run area north of Idaho City.
F&G conservation officers reported they suspect two young men in their 20s may be responsible for killing a five-point and a six-point.
Anyone with information can call the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at (800) 632-5999. Rewards are available for convictions, and callers can remain anonymous.”

    TetonBadger,

I am impressed that the thought to try to salvage the meat was brought into play. That is a great way to try to make the best of a terrible situation.

I don’t know what would cause a person to have such disregard for the law, but sadly, it seems to be a wide spread behavior.

Another cub incident, found on CNN today (and with a happy end): WOODFIN, North Carolina (AP) — Police in North Carolina had to halt traffic on a highway to help a mother bear get to her cub after it was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Police said the cub was struck Tuesday afternoon and the driver didn’t stop.
Officers in the western North Carolina town of Woodfin halted cars for about 20 minutes after the mother bear had failed twice at trying to get her 80-pound cub off the busy highway.
Sgt. Dawn Roberts says officers stood with rifles while others pulled the cub to the side of the road near the mother. She says the mother bear grabbed the cub by the scruff of the neck and ran off into the woods to tend to it.

Adding to that, I really thank people out there who manage to have even a small level of self awareness. It really makes a difference in this world.

These people who do the things posted in this threead are scared, stupid, confused and basically lack any kind of self awarness on any level. They go through life with blinders on.

In the end, all that matters is how we treat each other and our home planet.
