  1. I like the idea, however they refer to “scientific studies” without actually including at least a link to those studies, so that those that desire to contact agencies or newspapers can write an intelligent letter. I’d like to see science based, peer reviewed, up to date literature, written by researchers such as Dr’s William Ripple, Joel Burger, Doug Smith etc.
Most people that would write don’t have the time to search for the latest research…a “latest research” section of the website would be beneficial.
Also, do they really need a self serving page and picture of someone with the rack of an elk on his back?

  2. What a great looking website.

I second jerry b’s request, it would be great to at least see the citations for new peer reviewed wolf research.

  3. First of all, congratulations and all my best wishes for the future of this ambitious venture. My first impression of this early release of the website is highly favorable. I agree however with jerry b´s comments above about scientific documents. Please let me add a small additional remark about the link to the webshop of a commercial online book seller. Unfortunately the automated search for the term “wolf” creates the unstructured result of some 650 books, many from the fiction or children´s book category, just happening to have the term “wolf” in the title. There is a lot of excellent printed material about wolves available around the globe, be it books, booklets or documents. Well knowing, that an online list of wolf related literature is labour-intensive to create and maintain, in the long run it would nevertheless be worthwhile addition and – if maybe restricted to the subject “Wolves in the USA” – a manageable task.

  4. Interesting site. I liked the Wisconsin to Montana transplant and his takes and views. Don’t know why that pic of him would be offensive, unless you’re anti-hunting.

I do find it interesting that WWC is calling for a collaborative approach. From reading entries here, I have picked up that Ralph and other frequent contributors to this site don’t have a high regard for the collaborative process. This made the endorsement from Ralph and the WRF strike me as odd.

It is good to have an additional resource to bring in information. I will use the site in the future.

  5. Eric T.,

People and web sites certainly don’t have to agree with me 100% to get links and favorable publicity here.

The WRF itself is neither confrontational or collaborative. Most of our funds go into wolf research. We have no lobbying expenditures at all.

  6. Brian,

That’s not quite correct. The Western Wolf coalition really does consist of the groups listed on the site. They don’t provide an equal amount of activity, however.

It is true that Defenders provides more activity than other groups listed, and some like the Idaho Conservation League a lot less.

The Endangered Species Coalition is very active. So is the Jackson Hole Alliance and the Wyoming Chapter of the Sierra Club.

The Wolf Recovery Foundation participates in coalition conference calls about every other week.

  7. Ralph….I did suggest that to the contact person (Anne Carlson) listed on the website.
    She works for “defenders”….No response.

  8. Actually, Anne is paid through funds managed by Defenders, mostly because they have office space, and other resources that they make available to the coalition. She is actually an employee of the coalition funds are from a grant made to the coalition, defenders hosts her operations through resources and office space. She reports to a steering committee of members of the coalition.

  9. I sent a message to Anne about this discussion so she can view all the suggestions, and so that I don’t miss any or taint the comments. I believe she’ll see what she can do about that. I bet it’s ~ a citation access page ~ a suggestion that most participants in the group will like and act on. Give them a few days… or so.

  10. I sent an email with the research link suggestion and got a response from Anne indicating that she would add a “research” section soon.

  11. For those who requested an additional page for citations of scientific research, it shall be done… And soon.

I spoke with the web site creators on Thursday and they assured me, and others, that they agree on the need for a page offering that information. Since there is so much of it, there will be much to browse through.

    Stay tuned…
