I used to hunt deer in Leadbelt when I was a teenager. The area has an interesting history. Because of the difficulty in traversing the broken lava that became the Craters of the Moon, Leadbelt and Fish Creek, coming from the Carey side, made up the main Indian trail connecting the Wood Rivers with the Big Lost River Valley and beyond. Bison herds used the trail and so did the fur trappers of the Hudson Bay Company. John Work, of the Hudson Bay Company, complains in his journal about the overgrazing by Bison in the Lost River Valley near Darlington that was starving his trapping brigade’s horses, after coming down Leadbelt and Antelope Creeks.
Large bands of domestic sheep and horses used the trail every summer from the 1850s and 60s as they made their way from Oregon to Montana.
