Earth Firsters occupy Montana governor’s office (with update July 13)

At least they got a reception.  Sounds like fun.

Earth Firsters, megaload protesters occupy governor’s officeMissoulian

Schweitzer told the group he would not cede to their demands before they started playing the piano and dancing on the big table in the governor’s reception room in apparent frustration with the direction of the meeting. Schweitzer left the room.

Thanks Earth First….great to see the return of “civil disobedience”. We can use more to wake up all the “zombies” in Montana and elsewhere.

Thanks for the humour value, EF! At least you don’t resort to violence and destructive stuff like the Earth Liberation Front folks.

I’m sure out there somewhere in the blogosphere where I do not tromp much is some right winger blathering on rabidly about those dang greenies in Schweitzer’s office ( who by the way handled it pretty well, I thought).

I would interject here as a preemptive counterpoint that we recall some of the antics the Sagebrush Rebellion and cynically-named Wise Use Movement used in their turn at civil disobedience. The Jardine Shovel brigade comes to mind. Antics from down there in Catron County New mexico using bulldozers. Or Wyoming’s own rightwing firebrand Frank Rhoads who used to picket the sidwalks of the Worland WY district office of the BLM with his mule. Dear to my own heart are the photos I took here in Cody WY of the early Anti-Wolf marches and rallies. The comedic value of those was high , too.

I do miss Ed Abbey. I was hoping he and his Monkeywrench Gang would’ve been reincarnated in the popular western literature by now.

“Civil disobedience” is the excuse by the anti-wolf crowd to illegally kill wolves–lauding it by one group and condemning the other for the same is the ultimate in hypocrisy.

Not all civil disobedience is created equal. Killing endangered animals is not on par with a “sit in” at a government official’s office.

Violating a law in private is also not really civil disobedience, though it might be considered resistance. Civil disobedience is where it is done publicly and where the identity of those participating is known, or at least knowable.

Regardless, ignoring laws you disagree with is still BS, pro- or anti-wolf side. If you don’t like the law, change it through the proper channels, don’t do what you feel like doing. I agree that a sit-in doesn’t violate any laws, but escalating disapproval of wolf management through illegal behavior is just as wrong as poaching wolves.

“escalating disapproval of wolf management ……….” is NOT just as wrong as poaching wolves. Legal behavior, or otherwise.
    I’m done.

Illegal is illegal, no matter what side of the fence you are on.
