Mexico set to free gray wolves in NE Sonora

Mexico is poised to release Mexican wolves near the border with Arizona and New Mexico where, if they cross into the U.S. they would have full protection under the Endangered Species Act. This is giving ranchers some heartburn but, short of violating the ESA, there is nothing they can do to stop it.

The rancher statements at the end of the article say it all! Here is another article one on the same subject (I posted it already under the “have you come across..” thread – can you remove it there?).

This one talks about somewhat surprised and clueless US wildlife officials…

Paranoia is one of the modern day ranchers most troubling attributes. How do you think so many coyotes and other animals are continuously taken out by the FED goon squad.

The arrogance of the livestock industry never ceases to amaze me. Not only aren’t they satisfied with wildlife management in the US, they want to control how it’s done in Mexico too.

I really do hope eventually they pay for that arrogance when it comes to policy changes.

Wasn’t that supposed to have happened last year?

Mexico needs a few grizzly bears too!

That would make heads explode down here in AZ. That idea was unintentionally floated soon after the lobos were reintroduced back in 1998. There was actually an article in the paper regarding this and in the following days you should have read some of the letters to the editor back then.

Can you imagine the reaction now with the Tea Party firmly in control of the republican party and the current political climate down here. Reintroducing the grizz would start a violent, bloody revolution.

AZ has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately and unfortunately this would further stir the pot, big time.

Personally, I think a few grizz in the Blue/Gila would be great.

Lot of prejudice against bears I suspect. I wonder if humans will ever get over the habit of thinking they should wipe out anything they don’t know much about. Kill first and ask questions later has sort of been our mode of operation for 300 years or so. . maybe if the human race can live long enough we will garner wisdom.

Now, if we can only protect the wolves from being shot illegally. Has anyone EVER been prosecuted?? (Ariz/NMex/?).

Anyone have an update on these wolves in Mexico? I was told they have all been killed but I would love to hear that that’s not true…
