Wolves released in Mexico mountains near Arizona

Mexico has released five Mexican gray wolves into a mountain range just south of the Arizona and New Mexico border. If the wolves happen to enter the U.S. then they will be fully protected under the Endangered Species Act.

  1. “The release came after years of planning by Mexican officials and opposition by U.S ranchers, who are worried the wolves will cross into the US and be completely protected from capture or killing.”
These ranchers crack me up. They sure worry alot. I wonder what pisses them off more- the fact that wolves will be protected from capture and killing or the fact that the Mexican government was not impressed with the hysterical rhetoric……
I think there were 25 confirmed depredations all last year in both AZ and NM.

  2. Too bad it was only five wolves ( hopefully all of one pack and already socialized ).

    1. If this is the same five wolves they originally talked about releasing last year, I believe they are a family group.

  3. It’s good to see some Mexican Wolves get on the ground. Although it would be great to have free flow of wildlife across the border I kind hope they don’t come across because apparently there are a lot of folks who will kill wolves whether it’s legal or not. And enforcement of Endangered Species laws is a farce. If they do come over maybe they can invade the town of Columbus NM. We could call them the Pancho Villa pack.

  4. On a more serious note, does anyone know of an information source (website etc…) on the Mexican Mexican Wolf release ?

    1. Chris-
      I get alerts from –
      Mexicanwolves.org
There are two stories on the left side of the page, including one which looks like an adverisement page featuring a wolf and info about the Mexican conservation group Naturalia, who I had never heard of before.

  5. Thanks William. I do keep up on Mexicanwolves.org. Like you though I had never heard of Naturalia.

    1. Well, given the outlook of the current occupant of the Round House, things are about as expected. The weather is nice, though. 😉

If you come down this way anytime soon, give us a holler. The mailing address is still the same, tho’ our e-mails have changed. Ralph has it if you want it, or send me a note via the USPS and I’ll send it back.
