Here is a podcast by Adam Bronstein interviewing Jennifer Mamola with the John Muir Project. Jenn discusses insights and frustrations with current wildfire policy in Washington, D.C. She stresses the importance of shifting focus from backcountry forest management to home hardening and defensible spaces around communities.
Criticizing ineffective policies like the Fix Our Forests Act, she highlights the ecological necessity of allowing fire-adapted ecosystems to regenerate naturally. Jenn advocates for a community-out approach and better disaster mitigation funding, calling for Congress to adopt practical, science-backed solutions for true wildfire resilience.

We also need to prohibit all development is fire-prone areas to begin with. THAT’s the fundamental problem here. People move into fire-prone areas, then demand that the government destroy the areas to make them “safe.” On top of that, humans start 90% of wildfires. Killing trees doesn’t even work to stop wildfires, but that’s not the issue here because humans shouldn’t be killing trees in the first place. Earth First!
Definitely hear you! But FEMA claims 40% of us live in the WUI: https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/2020-07/fema_mitsaves-factsheet_2018.pdf
And ultimately, people are going to people and need to take responsibility for where the live.
I truly do not understand the idiocy of building a home in a “forest area” or too close to a Wilderness, without the awareness of the danger of wildfires in this time of climate change. Even less do I get why AFTER a wildfire or two or three or more, RE-BUILDING in the same area!
Things will not change or get better until humans wise up!
(although yeah, not much possibility of that)
