Jonathan Ratner has been in the trenches of public lands conservation for nearly 25 years. He started out doing forest carnivore work for the Forest Service, BLM, and the Inter-agency Grizzly Bear Study Team, with some Wilderness Rangering on the Pinedale Ranger District. That work lead him directly to deal with the gross corruption within the federal agencies’ range program.
I dont even know what to say about this article. The last four months have been so damned terrifying and depressing – but to do THIS to our most important resource of all?
Yes – very good informational article. BUT boy do I feel for all of those individuals who spent their lives trying to care for the best and most important resource we have!
Very hard to read

It’s not like federal lands were being well-managed before Trump, nor is Trump a root cause of any environmental problems. The NPS was the best manager of federal lands, but it often did the wrong thing environmentally. As a former environmental attorney, I can attest to the fact that we had to sue the NPS many times.
All Trump is doing is making an already bad situation worse. Ronald Reagan was by far the worst environmental president in my lifetime (for the U.S.; it could be argued that Cheney was as bad or worse because of all the wars he caused). What’s really needed here is a total change in attitude by the general public and their elected officials toward natural lands and the native nonhuman life there. Among other things, this means prioritizing life over money, business, “development” (which is actually destruction and killing), expansion, etc. Until that happens, we’ll just see more Trump-like actions. Yes, we need to fight these anti-environmental Trump policies and actions, but we need to do a lot more than just that.
I agree – no matter which political party is “in charge” – the same old, same old continues – sometimes there is a glimmer of light – usually when Dems are there – however, GAZA? (oh there are many other issues) But that one is just mind boggling. Good old money – profit – greed wins every time.
And the public lands – parks – Wilderness Areas? Politicians – far far too many of them – have no concept of those “resources”. That word means one thing – extraction – whether is mines, drilling, livestock grazing – the only thing they comprehend is extaction.
Yeah – st. reagan !
Have to add (as always) livestock lobby – grazing and the eradication of our Wild Horses & Burros really pisses me off.
I realize many disagree with my views – tough.
As frustrating as all of this crap is for me and others – I am sure you and anyone who has physically tried to make things right must be more so.
Corporate privatization is the meat and potatoes of fascism. The former “good” employees that resist coercion are branded as bad and are “cleansed” from the system which leaves behind those that have little integrity.
Like Eugene Debs stated ” Capitalism must have and needs a prison to protect itself from the criminals it has created”.
By the way the “Department of Government Evil ” boys even went after the Veterans Services making it much harder for vets to get medical treatment. If they don’t care about people that defended this country, then they certainly won’t give a shit about animals and habitats.
Debs also said that the “class which has the power to rob upon a large scale has also the power to control the government and legalize their own robbery”. Will they burn out before the earths systems crash?
Or are the jellyfish, centipedes, scorpions and ants going to become earths chief inhabitants.
