Dr. Ralph Maughan is professor emeritus of political science at Idaho State University. He was a Western Watersheds Project Board Member off and on for many years, and was also its President for several years. For a long time he produced Ralph Maughan's Wolf Report. He was a founder of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. He and Jackie Johnson Maughan wrote three editions of "Hiking Idaho." He also wrote "Beyond the Tetons" and "Backpacking Wyoming's Teton and Washakie Wilderness." He created and is the administrator of The Wildlife News.

This story has many angles. The anti-wolf PR is certainly off the wall and outside of any science or even ad hoc experience of any experienced outdoors person. SCI has stepped on their “something” by being involved in this and yet I have seen SCI pour money into conservation projects with no expectation of a any “big racks for big bucks” quid pro quo. I am not sure that every mouth that speaks for SCI is under control. That said, if they can’t manage their own PR, they deserve the reaction seen in this article, as polarizing and extreme as it is.
